- Well, in all practicality, what I think you should do as a way of working this stuff under your fingers is pick, say two or three of these maximum for starters. Just try to get really comfortable with say going from that one to say, this one. (strums mandolin) Okay, that's twos sets, and just really master that before you rock on into all the other positions, but at least now you've got them. You can refer back and say, "Gee, I'm getting bored. "What was that one Mike did up the neck on the 12th fret? "That was a really cool way of doing it." More than likely, what's going to happen is, especially after you start looking at this circle, and we're going to go through that next, is you're going to start seeing relationships of one set of chords to the other. You're going to say, "Gee, I keep repeating myself with these shapes." All I need to really know is where's the root, and I'm going to be able to play my little set of 2-5-1s through any chord. It does come down to memorizing…
