Chord basics

- The next few videos are about notating chord progressions and symbols. And because it's unavoidable that this will include a bit of music theory, let's start by reviewing the structures of triads' seventh chords. And because most of the chords in a song are derived from the song's key, let's review the relationship between chords and chord progression to keys and scales. So the most basic chords that we talk about oftentimes are triads. And the word triad means three so we're talking about a three-note chord. So here we're looking at the four basic triads built off of a root, which would be a C. We see that in each one of these chords. So let's talk about the differences in how we could construct these chords. Well, the notes in a C major chord would be C, E and G, and if we look at the interval or distance between the root note, which is on the bottom, going up to the middle note which we call the third, and up to the top note, which we refer to as the fifth, we can establish how…
