- [Instructor] Now that we have a basic understanding of time signatures, as well as note and rest lengths, it's time to take a look at shorter note values. So just like a half note is worth half the value of a whole note, and a quarter note is worth half the value of a half note, we can further divide a quarter note into two eighth notes. So here we're seeing a graphic of an eighth note, and we can see that it differentiates from the quarter note in that it has the same note head and a stem, but it has this other curved shape attached to the end of the stem, which is called a flag. So now we've filled two measures all with eighth notes, so there's eight eighth notes in a measure of four four. Now when we count time, we only put the number on the beat and we use the syllable and on the and of the beat. So we'd count these eight eighth notes one and two and three and four and.
