Oscillator sync

Oscillator sync

- In the previous chapter, we focused on the traditional subtractive synthesis approach. We have one or more oscillators going into a filter to remove some of their harmonics, and then send the filter into an amplifier to shape the loudness of the note. In this chapter, we're going to focus on some extended techniques, different ways of modulating oscillators and other sources to create more harmonics and move the harmonics around in unusual ways. Sometimes the results are quite harsh and noisy. Sometimes they're beautiful, bell-like, and other worldly. So we're going to have fun in this chapter exploring different techniques. First up is oscillator sync, an old traditional technique that could be used in East Coast subtractive synthesis, but really does some cool things to the wave shape and to the harmonics. What I've done is I've taken a copy of the square wave of my second oscillator, which is going to be my master oscillator, and I've descended off to my oscilloscope, and it's…
