- By now you know that the building blocks of the music business are great songs and great performances. In this lesson, we're gonna talk about how to turn those great performances into money. You're gonna do it by performing concerts. In this lesson, we're gonna talk about who the players are in the live music biz, we're gonna talk about getting a strategy for building a live career, we're gonna talk of course about how you get paid, we'll talk about how you can start building a great live show today, we'll talk about bookin' that first gig and tour, and then finally, we'll talk about some new tools you have at your disposal to help you build a live music career.
Let's talk about why touring is so important. Having a successful live business is an important part of building a career for a number of reasons. First, those live performances are where an artist, their songs and their fans all come face to face. It's one thing to sing in a studio where you can keep doing a song over and over until you get it right, or you can cheat a little bit with a little auto-tune here and a little auto-tune there, trying to make everything just perfect, but there's nothing quite like watching a great performer sing a great song live in the flesh, and being in that same room with them and feeling that connection with other fans and that artist.
For me, the truest test of an artist's talent has always been whether they can do it in a live performance. Behind the wizard's curtain in a recording studio, you can fake it a bit, but when you're on that stage, you really have to have it or it's gonna show.
