- Okay, so we know how the copyright system works. We know who the players are and we're convinced, I hope by now, how important music publishing is. Now let's spend a minute and talk about how that publishing income is split up. Now, for the record, I know I talk a lot about "getting the money" and i'll just have to ask you to forgive me. I can never seem to let go of my manager's desire to get that money, but it's important stuff. We are trying to make music a career not a hobby. So getting that money is something we have to talk about, and music publishing, is where there is some serious money. So I want to take a minute to explain, how the math of music publishing works. When a dollar of publishing income comes in, here's how it gets split up. Fifty percent of that dollar or fifty cents, goes to the writer, guaranteed.
