Getting paid: An Insider's Guide to Today's Music Biz 09: Touring

In most cases you will be paid by a guaranteed fee or a percentage of gross ticket sales or a combination of both. If you are be lucky you might get what’s known as a ‘piece of the door’. Once you’ve got a little bit more track record of selling tickets you might ask for a “GUARANTEE” which is a flat fee. As you become a bit more successful and start playing for more established promoters you’ll likely be paid not only a guaranteed fee, you’ll also get a percentage of sales after deduction of show expenses. In some cases, an artist instead of a guarantee and a percentage of the net, you might get a guarantee with bonuses paid at certain levels of ticket sales. When you get to the big time you’ll leave it to your agent and manager to get you the best deal you can.
