Defamation (libel) concerns
- [Voiceover] Defamation. In 2014, a doctor employed by World Wrestling Entertainment, WWE, sued podcaster Colt Cabana and wrestler CM Punk for comments they made about the doctor's skills on the popular podcast The Art of Wrestling. The doctor claimed he was defamed and sued for $1,000,000. With that case in mind, here are some rules to remember about defamation and podcasts. It's not defamation if you're telling the truth. Defamation, also referred to as liable, or slander when it is spoken, occurs when you make a false statement about a living person that injures that person's reputation. The truth is referred to as a perfect defense, but it may also be an expensive defense. For example, even if the statements made about the WWE doctor were true, Cabana and Punk, the defendants, would have to prove in court that medical malpractice occurred, a challenging task.
