- [Voiceover] Copyright Registration. I've discussed copyright and fair use in earlier videos and in this video, I'll focus on copyright registration. Registration is not required to get a copyright. You get a copyright automatically if your podcast is original and fixed. Original means that the podcast and its contents were not copied from another source. A podcast is fixed once it is recorded. Registration is only required if you want to file a lawsuit again someone for ripping off your podcast. Even though it's not required, registration can help. Registration tells the world you've staked a copyright claim to your podcast. Once you register your podcast, it is indexed in the copyright office's records, much like a land deed is filed at a county recorder's office. Also, if you've run into a dispute over your podcast, registration provides a strategic financial bonus provided that you timely register.
