- When I started in the music business, most managers were referred to as personal managers, and it made sense, that relationship with the artist and the manager was just that, it was very very personal. While artists and managers share the same goal to be successful, they bring a whole different skill set to the mission. Artists are all about the music, and managers are all about the business. Managers and artists, they think differently. Artists are more instinctual, they deal in feel. And the opposite is true for managers, who tend to be more pragmatic and tend to be more results-oriented. Finding the right balance among those differences is the key to this successful artist/manager relationship. I spent 20 plus years as an artist manager, working with artists every day.
