Customizing your Moodle profile is an important first step in creating your Moodle course. Moodle makes it easy to add your personal information to your profile as well as to customize your account settings, including notifications and user permissions. It is important to take time in the beginning of your course set-up to personalize your Moodle account.
- In this video, we'll take a look at how to customize our Moodle account including our profile as well as our notification settings. Now, in order to do this, I first need to log into my account. So in the upper right corner, I'll click on Log in and I'll go down and enter my password. Now it's important to remember that your login screen and dashboard will probably look different than mine as your institution has likely created a default dashboard and has customized some of the permission settings. Now in the upper right hand corner next to my name I'm going to click the drop down menu and then select Profile.
This will give us information about our profile and you'll notice in this main section here I can click on Edit Profile. From here, we can edit information such as our first and last name, email address, you can choose whether to allow people to see your email or if you want to hide it. You could enter in the city you're from, country, and your time zone. And here you could enter a brief description so you could leave a short bio or some of your interests, things that you wanted to share about yourself.
Down below we have the option to include a user picture. Right now I currently do not have a picture. In order to do this, I'm going to click inside of this box, I'll navigate to my desktop and select an image that I have of myself on my desktop. Once I have that selected, I'll click on Upload this file. And as you can see, that now appears here and will also appear as our profile picture on our Moodle account. We can leave a description if we wanted. We also have the option to list additional names if you wanted to phonetically spell out your first or last name, enter a middle name or an alternate name.
I'm not going to do that. You could list some interests here. And you also have the ability to enter in a web page, Skype ID, Yahoo ID, and several other things. For the time being, I'm going to leave this blank and I'm going to click on Update Profile. Now as you can see on the left hand side, my profile picture is now visible and it also appears in the upper right corner next to my name. Now I'm going to go back up to the dropdown menu in the upper right and I'm going to select Preferences.
Now, we can check a lot of different preferences in our account. We can also edit things from this page, including changing our password or our preferred language. For this case, in the beginning in setting up my account I'm going to set up my notification settings. And in order to do this, I'm going to click on Messaging. And now we can customize the way that we want to receive notifications for our course. So as you can see there are a lot of different things we can be notified about within our notifications section.
We have the option to be notified as a Popup or to be notified via Email. And for each of these you can go through and you can click on the boxes that you prefer as your form of notification. So in other words, if I have personal messages between users if I wanted to receive those as Popup notifications, I'll leave this checked. If I also wanted to receive those as Emails, I can check that as well. So there are some default settings already done in here and I'm not going to go through all of the different things.
But this is something that you're going to want to take a look at and make sure that you have your notifications set up in a way that will maximize your efficiency within the course. So in other words, you're going to want to be notified of certain things such as questions that are being asked of you such as new students enrolling in the course. But I recommened not being notified about too much otherwise you start to loose focus on important notifications that you are receiving. So here, for instance, if Assignments when Assignment notifications are coming in if I for instance, didn't want to receive these as emails but rather as Popups, I can make those changes.
And when we're done, we'll save those at the bottom. And you can customize some General settings, such as, a beep when Popup notifications are displayed. You can prevent non-contacts from messaging you or temporarily disable notifications. Now, I have mine the way that I would like if for right now so I'm going to click on Save Changes. I suggest you take some time upfront to setup your profile page and customize these account settings, especially the ways in which you'll be notified of things in your course.
