License a user

- [Instructor] One of the more common administrative tasks in Office 365 is licensing users to use the Office 365 software. So let's take a look at how to do that. Right now I'm logged in to Office 365 and I'm in the Office 365 Admin Center. So what I'm going to do is click on Users and then I'll click on Active Users and this is going to take me to a list of all of the users that are set up to use Office 365. Now you'll notice that I have one user in particular right here, Chris Green, who's currently unlicensed. So what this means that this user would be able to log in, but they wouldn't be able to use any of the Office applications. So let's go ahead and change that. I'm going to click on this user's account and that takes me to a screen that shows various attributes of the user and if you look right here, you can see that the second thing on the list is product licenses and currently no products have been assigned to this user. So let's change that. The way that we do that is by clicking on Edit and that opens up a screen that gives me various licensing options and for each product here we can see how many licenses are currently in use. For example, Office 365 Enterprise E3 Developer currently has 18 of my 25 licenses available. So let's go ahead and license this particular user for Office 365 Enterprise E3 Developer. I do that by clicking the slide bar to On and instantly when I do that, I'm also given the ability to turn on and off access to the individual products that come with that Office 365 Enterprise E3 Developer account. I'm going to leave all of this set to On, but I'm going to scroll down a little bit and I'm also going to give this particular user a Power BI license. You can see that I have unlimited free licenses available for Power BI. So I'll go ahead and turn that On as well and I'll go ahead and click Save and the user has been assigned some licenses. So I'll go ahead and close this out and I'll close this. Now if we look at the user's status rather than it saying unlicensed, we can see which products this user is licensed for. Now the technique that I just showed you can also be used to revoke licenses. For example, if I wanted to remove Power BI from this user, I would click on the user's account, I would go to Edit under Product Licenses, and I would turn Off the license for Power BI and click Save. So now this user is licensed for Office 365 Enterprise E3 Developer, but they're no longer licensed to use Power BI. So that's how you can control licensing within Office 365.
