- [Instructor] This short video series will help you understand the layout of CAD software in the marketplace. Now, if you say CAD to a lot of people they immediately think of AUTOCAD from AUTODESK. It is the grand daddy of all of design software and is started it's life as a 2D software. So you see this, these are elevations that were used to create floor plans for skyscrapers, designs for the largest and most complex bridges in the world, down to mechanical designs for cellphones. All sorts of things can be done with AUTOCAD. So why did other software pop up? Well, one for price, people wanted free versions or less expensive versions of software to use and people wanted different capabilities in their design software. As I said, AUTOCAD started out as a 2D program and then later evolved into three dimensions but other tools also grabbed the reigns of 3D a lot earlier than AUTOCAD did.
