- To follow this course, you will need to have at least a basic working understanding of Autodesk Maya and Adobe After Effects. If you are new to the world of 3D and compositing, I suggest you check out some of these essential training courses before you try to dive into the advanced materials in Maya. You should take a look at Maya 2016 Essential Training with George Maestri. Also, After Effects CC Essential Training (2015) with Ian Robinson. Peruse Maya Rendering and After Effects Composites with Lee Lanier, and Creating Shader Networks in Maya and Mental Ray with Aaron F. Ross.
Andy Beane includes two methods for creating advanced Maya materials. He starts with smaller, easier materials that can be composited together. He then shows how to combine these same materials in an all-in-one-method for rendering, and evaluate the pros and cons of both techniques. Chapter 3 demonstrates the subsurface scattering (SSS) material in mental ray, which will strengthen your material toolbox, and shows how to composite the results in After Effects.
