Join George Maestri for an in-depth discussion in this video Using the extrude tools, part of Maya 2015 Essential Training.
…Probably the most common way to add detail, to…a polygonal model, is to use the Extrude tool.…So let's take a look at that.…Here I have a simple, model, and I want to,…add some detail, so I can use Extrude, to do that.…Now Maya has, three Extrude Commands.…And it also has an Extrude command in the modeling toolkit.…So under Edit Mesh, we have Extrude for Vertex, Edge and Face.…
Now face is probably the most common way…to extrude, so let's go ahead and start there.…I'm going to select the model.…Then right-click over it and go into Face mode.…Now I am going to select one of these middle…faces here, and let's just do Edit Mesh > Extrude.…And when I do that, this icon comes up and allows me to extrude.…Now I can grab on any axis here, I am going…to grab on the z axis or the blue axis, and…if I want I can push that detail in to create…a hole in the box, or I can pull it outwards.…
Now this gizmo gives me a lot more control.…I can move this up and down if I want, or back and forth.…I can click on the boxes to scale.…
