Learn how to set up Maya project folders.
- [Voiceover] If you have access to the Exercise Files I provided with this course, go ahead and download those now if you haven't already. Extract them and place them on a non-system drive if you have one. That means, don't put the Exercise Files on the same hard drive as your operating system. And the reason is, in this course, you could eat up up to 300 gigabytes of storage, and some of that will be in your Project Folder. And to avoid any issues, I strongly recommend that you unzip the Exercise Files, and put them on a non-system drive.
If you don't have the Exercise Files you can still do the course by creating assets as you go. If you're on a mobile device, or simply don't have Maya installed, or in front of you at the moment, you can still learn by observation. Let's just look at what's in the Exercise Files that I have provided, open that up. There are no textures and there are no rendered images, and there is no cache for any of the simulations. All you've got are some scenes, so open up the Scenes Folder. We can see that there is a file for almost every movie in the course, and occasionally there will be a finished example, like this one you see.
Buy most of these are a start state for the beginning of a particular movie in the course. Some of these Scene Files that I provide to you, we'll expect to see a cache on the hard drive, that's the simulation stored on disc. And if that cache is not found, then your simulation won't play, or you may get error messages. That's not really a problem, it's just that I can't provide the caches because they're too large, they're on the order of tens of gigabytes.
So some of the Scene Files that I provide, may not play unless you generate a new cache. Well you'll learn all about how to do that in the course. Let's now jump into Maya and look at how to create a Project Folder if you don't have the Exercise Files. Go to the File menu, Project Window, and the default project location for Maya is in the system drive, in the current user's documents folder. We want to create a new folder that's not on that system drive, click New, and we'll just call it Bifrost Project, and then Navigate.
Once again I want to go to a non-system drive, I've got a secondary hard drive here which is labeled the F drive. And just navigate to that location and Select. We're gonna create a new Maya project called Bifrost Project on the F drive and click Accept. If you do have the Exercise Files you'll want to point Maya at the unzipped Project Folder, go into the File menu and choose Set Project, and once again on my F drive here I've got Exercise Files.
Just select wherever you've placed that folder and click Set. I recommend you go into the File menu and choose Save Preferences to store the Project Folder explicitly. And then we can test to see that it's actually looking in the right place, go to File, Open Scene, and indeed we're taken to the F drive, Exercise Files Scenes, and here are all of the Maya ASCII scene files for the course. Alright now we're ready to learn a little bit about how Bifrost works before we begin our production.
