Join Andy Beane for an in-depth discussion in this video Solution: Add your own material, part of Maya: Advanced Materials.
(digital cymbal ringing)…- Welcome back.…How did you do?…I hope your challenge went well.…I'm here in AfterEffects to show you my solution.…I chose to render simple materials…in mattes and Maya…and then complete the composite in AfterEffects…for my dirty gazing ball look.…I started by actually just rendering…a rust material over the entire ball.…I'll show you the render here.…Again, it was a simple blend with…a bump matte and a specular matte…and a color matte based off of rust.…I created the rust matte in mudbox…to match the rust that we saw on the truck…with the spottiness and the scratchiness.…
Using the same techniques that we used…when we composited our gazing globe the first time,…I pre-composed our two layers together to create rust.…We'll open up that layer…and show you what that looks like.…So I have my rust material that's Luma Matted,…I'll take that matte off and show you,…and then had the gazing ball rust matte…sitting on top of it…with our hand-painted texture to match…the rust pattern that we were going for,…
Andy Beane includes two methods for creating advanced Maya materials. He starts with smaller, easier materials that can be composited together. He then shows how to combine these same materials in an all-in-one-method for rendering, and evaluate the pros and cons of both techniques. Chapter 3 demonstrates the subsurface scattering (SSS) material in mental ray, which will strengthen your material toolbox, and shows how to composite the results in After Effects.
