Join Andy Beane for an in-depth discussion in this video Rendering, part of Advanced Materials in Maya.
In this movie, I will be going over…how to set up the final lighting and material settings…to achieve a professional photo studio look.…I am here in the exercise file 0309 start.…And I've gone ahead and done a test render of our scene.…As you can see,…the first thing that we really need to change…for our photo studio look,…is the lighting that we're using.…A directional light is a great light for quick tests…or simulating the sun, but,…for a photo studio look,…it just doesn't hold up.…So let's minimize our render view,…select our directional light, and hit delete.…
Let's go out to our perspective view,…turn off our resolution gate.…And go up to Create.…Lights.…Area Light.…The Area Light will actually take into consideration…its position, scale and rotation.…So, I'm going to actually scale this particular light…to be about the size of a light diffuser…you would see in a light studio.…I'm going to move it up and above our grapes…and rotate it down,…so that it's almost pointing straight down.…
An Area Light will give us very realistic shadows…
Andy Beane includes two methods for creating advanced Maya materials. He starts with smaller, easier materials that can be composited together. He then shows how to combine these same materials in an all-in-one-method for rendering, and evaluate the pros and cons of both techniques. Chapter 3 demonstrates the subsurface scattering (SSS) material in mental ray, which will strengthen your material toolbox, and shows how to composite the results in After Effects.
