Join George Maestri for an in-depth discussion in this video Raytracing reflections and refractions, part of Maya 2015 Essential Training.
…Another rendering effect that's very important are reflections and refractions.…Now these are a part of ray tracing within mental…ray, and let's take a look at how these work.…Now by default, ray tracing is turned on for mental ray.…And when we render scene, you will typically get reflections in the scene.…So here I have a scene, and this…is pretty much default, and everything is reflecting properly.…
Now we can control reflections a little bit more, both…in the render settings menu, as well as in the material.…So in render settings, we can go over to the…Quality tab and you'll see we have a ray tracing option.…We can increase the quality of the ray tracing…by increasing the maximum number of reflections and refractions.…So if we turn this up to ten, then we'll actually get better quality ray tracing,…because it will bounce the light ten times in a reflection or a refraction.…
And then we also have a Maximum Trace Depth, which we can also turn up.…Usually, I keep that around ten or so.…Now, we can also do this in the material.…
