- When we create materials, we often use bitmaps as textures. Applying a flat 2D image to a 3D object can be a lot like gift wrapping. We take a flat image, and we fit it to the 3D object we want to wrap. In 3D, this technique is called mapping. Now take a look at this can. It is a 3D object, shaped a lot like a cylinder. The label however is simply a flat piece of paper that wraps around the can. Now this flat label is very similar to a bitmap image. In the computer, we can do the same thing by mapping the flat label to the 3D can. The flat bitmap image is mapped cylindrically and placed on the can. Now, a cylinder, such as this can, has more surfaces than just the label. The ends of the can also have color and texture. We can simulate that by mapping another image to represent the ends of the can. This mapping style is called planar because it is mapped along a flat plane. So, planes on the ends and a cylinder in…
