- [Voiceover] As of version 2017, Maya's preferred renderer will become Arnold. Now, previously, Mental Ray has been the preferred renderer, and it has been so for well over a decade, so there is a lot of legacy that goes along with Mental Ray. So for this course, we are going to be teaching both Arnold and Mental Ray renderers. Now if you want to follow along with the rendering chapters, you need to make sure that you have both installed.
Now if you go the Render Settings menu here, you'll see that we have a pulldown, and you should be able to see Mental Ray and the Arnold renderer. If you don't, then you need to check to make sure the plugins are activated, and that you have the software installed in the first place. Now for Mental Ray, you need to go to the NVIDIA website and find the Mental Ray download, which will become available as soon as Maya 2017 goes live.
Go ahead and download and install it. Now once you have all of the software installed, we can go into Windows, Settings Preferences, Plugin Manager. And what we need to do is just go ahead and scroll down until you find Mental Ray plugins. And you should see something that says, Maya2mr.mll. Go ahead and make sure that's clicked to Loaded and Auto Load, and that way, it will automatically load when you start Maya.
So if you don't have Mental Ray installed, go ahead and do that if you want to follow along.
It starts with the basics of selecting and manipulating objects and organizing scenes, as you learn the interface and explore Maya's features. Author George Maestri then takes you through polygonal modeling, creating and refining meshes, sculpting, and NURBS modeling. Once you understand modeling, George will show how to create and apply materials to surfaces—adding color, texture, and reflectivity. He'll then integrate cameras, lighting, and depth-of-field effects into the rendering process, using the built-in software renderer, mental ray, and the new Arnold for Maya renderer. Last but not least, he'll show how to add movement and life to your work with Maya's animation tools.
