Join George Maestri for an in-depth discussion in this video Introducing NURBS modeling and editing, part of Maya 2015 Essential Training.
…Now let's move over to the other type…of geometry that Maya supports and that's NURBS.…Now we touched on these very briefly, but if you…recall a NURBS services is fundamentally different from a polygonal surface.…Where as a polygonal surface has polygons that are bounded by straight edges.…A NURBS surface has patches that are bounded by curves.…And this gives the surface a much more organic feel.…Now another big difference with NURBS…surfaces is that they're always rectangular patches.…
Now you can twist these patches up in to all sorts of shapes.…But when it all comes down to it, a NURBS…surface is basically square or rectangular patches that are just deformed.…Now we can see this a little bit more…closely if we look at this sphere and this cylinder.…Let's start with this sphere.…If I go into my creation parameters for this sphere…here, under my Inputs, I can vary the sweep of this.…Now you can see how I can basically open this up and…close it so it's not really tied together at this double line.…
And you can see that there's a double line right here.…
