Join Ryan Kittleson for an in-depth discussion in this video Drawing guidelines for retopology, part of Digital Creature Creation in ZBrush Photoshop and Maya.
The mesh that we created from ZSpheres and then used DynaMesh to even out the…topology with has worked out pretty well to start sculpting on.…However, we need to get this guy setup for rigging and animation.…That means we have to retopologize it.…Retopology is going to create a new wireframe that has the same shape, size, and…detail of the current model but with a different arrangement of polygons.…The result will be something that can be rigged and animated.…As it is now, the edges of the mesh don't always flow along with the major…anatomical forms like skin-folds, muscles, and bony plates, retopology will change that.…
One bit of warning, make sure that you will not have to make any substantial…changes to the creature's design after this point.…If you retopologize and then it turns out that your art director or client…wasn't happy with the design you'll have to redo a lot of this work.…Better to get a solid approval of the creature from anyone in charge before…continuing, otherwise you'll probably find yourself wasting a lot of time.…
