When you start working with polygonal models, you realize that the edges of the model are straight lines.…So the less detail you have in your model, the more jagged it looks.…But Maya has ways to automatically smooth this out, and it's called Subdivision Surfaces.…We have this fish here, and if I select it you can see how the geometry on the fish is fairly jagged.…It's made of straight lines and even the tail, you can see how we've got cut of a point here…in the tail, and the lines between this are really more angular than curved.…
And a fish really is a little bit more for organic shape, it's more curvy.…So we can actually get this effect by using what are called Subdivision Surfaces.…And this is actually automatically in Maya, if you use the Mental Ray Renderer.…For a subdivision surfaces, we have three display modes.…If you hit the 1 key on your keyboard, you get the display of the polygonal object.…If you hit the 2 key, the polygonal object goes to what's called a cage, and we can see…the smooth object underneath.…
