Join David Mattingly for an in-depth discussion in this video Creating a projection camera, part of Digital Matte Painting Essentials 5: Camera Projection in Maya.
…Every view port in Maya can be thought of as…a camera, and that's actually how Maya sets them up.…Maya has certain built-in cameras for the set view ports, such as…the PERSP, or perspective camera, which can be accessed through the panels menu.…Maya also has orthographic, or flat on cameras built-in,…which you can access in the same place, under Orthographic.…These cameras can only view the scene from…the front, side, or top, they can't be rotated.…
You can also access these cameras through the View Cube, as I mentioned…before We need to set up a special camera to do the camera projection.…And it's very important that you do not…use Maya's built in perspective camera to do it.…You must add a new camera by going up to Create…> Camera, and then choose the first one that just says Camera.…These lower two have more controls on…them, which we don't need for this project.…When the new camera's added, we can view the scene…through it by going back…to Panels>Perspective, and selecting camera one.…
Now you see what the camera does.…
