Become proficient at creating polygonal primitive objects in Maya 2017. In this video, George takes a look at the various types of standard polygonal objects available within Maya. He demonstrates how to create a box, sphere, torus, cylinder, and other types of objects. He also shows how to adjust detail before and after creation.
- [Voiceover] When you model from scratch in Maya,…typically, you're gonna start with a simple primitive,…and then shape that into the object you want.…So when you're doing polygonal modeling,…you can create any number of polygonal primitives.…We can do this in one of two places.…We can do Create, Polygon Primitives,…in fact, I'm gonna tear this off,…and we have a number of these.…We have Sphere, Cube, Cylinder, and a bunch of others.…So if you wanna create something,…all you have to do is click on it.…
And when we do, it creates that object.…So in this case, it created a sphere.…Now I'm gonna delete this.…Now if we want, we can change the creation parameters…by clicking on this box next to the name of the function.…So in this case, we can change the radius,…the number of divisions, and…the axis around which it is drawn.…So I'm gonna go ahead and hit Create again,…and you can see that it creates it.…Now typically, when you model,…you often want to click and drag…to create it to whatever size you want.…

It starts with the basics of selecting and manipulating objects and organizing scenes, as you learn the interface and explore Maya's features. Author George Maestri then takes you through polygonal modeling, creating and refining meshes, sculpting, and NURBS modeling. Once you understand modeling, George will show how to create and apply materials to surfaces—adding color, texture, and reflectivity. He'll then integrate cameras, lighting, and depth-of-field effects into the rendering process, using the built-in software renderer, mental ray, and the new Arnold for Maya renderer. Last but not least, he'll show how to add movement and life to your work with Maya's animation tools.
