- As an engineer, I wish I could give you an exact formula for how to create the perfect humor every single time. The problem is that humor is partially predicated on surprise, so if there was a formula, there would be no surprise. I mean, two plus two equals four no matter how creative you get. But I can give you a MAP, a framework to follow to find the right humor to use to achieve the goal you're after. While the humor MAP won't tell you exactly what to say or do, it can give you direction to make sure the humor you choose is effective. The MAP stands for your medium, audience, and purpose where the medium is how are going to execute the humor, the audience is who is going to receive that humor, and the purpose is why you want to use humor in the first place.
