Use a keyword research tool
- [Instructor] Keyword tools have been used for decades to find how people search. These tools enable you to find, organize, and explore how people search for information. In a keyword tool, you start by taking a keyword concept. In this case, dog training. In the keyword tool that I'm using, Word Tracker, I can choose the database that I want to search, such as Google, Amazon, Ebay, or YouTube. I recommend searching both YouTube and Google databases. The keyword tool will retrieve the search words of this core phrase, and provide you with all the variations that people use. At the top of the list, in the volume column, you will have the words that are the most popular. Now, a word about popularity and word counts. Don't take them at face value from any keyword tool. None of the sources, Google, Amazon, or any others share their data. They only share a small percentage, so any keyword tool will utilize data sampling. The result, don't take these as hard numbers. Simply more of a guide. In this case, the phrase dog training is very specific, so that phrase by itself is one of the more popular. However, we simply can't stop with the most popular. We also want to see what is related, and what other words are being used. I'll look through these words and find the ones that are specific to my videos. In order to save my work, most keyword research tools offer a list feature. Here, I can create a list for dog training. Then, when I want to save keywords to this project, all I have to do is click on a word, and it's added to my list. Now, I can think of any similar words, synonyms or alternates. In my case, I could also look at puppy training, which provides a smaller set of searches, but will also have some great keywords. Ideally, I want to understand the breadth of things that people search for, and the words they use. I'll go through all of these research methods, and continue to add keywords into my project. Then, when I'm done, I can work with the keywords in the keyword research tool by clicking on the list tool, or I can export them as a spreadsheet file, and work on them there. The best way to learn with a keyword research tool is actually to get into it. Take the knowledge you have about content, your content, and look to see how people search for your business, your products, your ideas. Learn the words that they are searching from, and I guarantee you'll learn something.
