- [Narrator] I want to take a few minutes to discuss subdomains. This is a hot topic in the world of SEO, it's widely debated, and it's worth really understanding what's going on when you decide whether or not to use a subdomain. But before we can unravel how these subdomains interact with your optimization efforts, let's start by talking about what a domain really is. A domain has three parts, the top-level domain, abbreviated as TLD, the domain name, and the subdomain. You may also hear me mention root domain, and this includes both the domain name and the top-level domain. Top-level domains are also commonly called suffixes. This is your .com, .net, .book, and so on. Countries can also have top-level domains. We refer to these as country code top-level domains, or CCTLDs. That's say, .uk, .de, .ca, and so on.
