Stages of problem-solving

- Problem-solving typically goes through six stages. Framing, divergence, emergence, convergence, testing, and implementation. Most of the brainstorming techniques we've reviewed naturally walked through these steps, but some may skip a step, and in many situations, you'll want to repeat a step or drill deeper into one. By understanding this process, you can be aware of how your brainstorming session is progressing and you can quickly adapt to help bring out the right results. Let's look at these in more detail. The first step is framing the problem. This is the goal setting that we've addressed earlier. The key is always to make sure the problem is understood by those that are helping to find a solution. Next is divergence. This is the fun and creative part of the process. Here is where you're going through all of that ideation. You'll keep finding new ideas, but there's no real clear solution yet.
