- I have a client, I'll call James. Before I started working with him James had this habit of listening to his employees for about two sentences before he would then interrupt and say, I know what you're getting ready to say, and what would really happen is James would assume that he knew not only what they were saying but what they meant by what they were saying. And his assumptions were always based on what he would do or what he would think and those assumptions were often incorrect. So here are three reasons why assumptions are a big mistake. One, they're often based on your life situation. So that means that you are giving solutions based on what you would do instead of what the person who you're listening to would do. Two, they don't allow for someone else's life experience or opinion, which means that you're not hearing what the other person would do in this situation.
