Keyword research

- [Instructor] Understanding keywords is the essential skill for improving rankings. Face it, we all find information by searching for it. Understanding how to research, find, and utilize keywords improves your chances of showing up in the search engine rankings. With video, it's no different. In fact, it's even more critical, as it's easier to get a video into the first page of search results than it is a webpage; however, you have to know what people are searching for, the words they use, and how they communicate intent through their search. The advantage of utilizing video to gain rankings is that it increases your visibility in both search engine rankings and in the video site you use. The more relevant your content is to the search query, the higher it'll rank. The first step is to define your business or video category. Are you offering tutorials and training, business or product sales, information, entertainment, or gaming? Next, is there a problem or solution? What problem are you helping people to solve? Try to frame that question in the words of a searcher or viewer. Focus on the purpose and value for your content in the description. After that, do a few searches within your choice of category. Look at the content and the results. How much of it overlaps with your content? If you find similar channels or videos, take note of the words being used in the video titles and descriptions. This is called a seed list, which you will use to start gathering relevant keywords. Make note of repetitive keywords or keyword concepts. Your list might be small, especially if you have a very focused product, business, or service. Sometimes it may be as much as 20 or 30 keywords for broader content, or even more for a general interest category. See how many you can gather from your own content and from evaluating the video results in your category.
