How brainstorming works

- When it comes time to brainstorm, you'll be conducting a brainstorming or ideation session. Now, this session doesn't need to be complex or difficult, and it can be scheduled or impromptu. You can make brainstorming a small activity in an existing meeting, or an activity with your morning coffee. You can even make brainstorming the event. However, it's not good enough to simply say, "Okay, it's time for a brainstorming session." Brainstorming works best when you use a specific technique. A brainstorming technique is a blueprint for generating ideas. It's a set of instructions that you follow, and these techniques provide you with the right steps, depending on the type of problem you're trying to solve, how you're trying to solve it, and with who. Later in this course, we're going to explore many different techniques for brainstorming. I want to really encourage you to put these techniques into practice. It's not good enough to simply listen to them. You'll gain a little value if you only study them. Instead, review the techniques, and identify the ones that are most helpful for your situation, and then carve out time to actually leverage them. You can practice them alone or with your team, but you must be using them.
