- So, what exactly is a cookie? Well unfortunately, a computer cookie isn't something delicious that comes out of an oven. It's actually tracking code, and you should know what they are, how they are used, and where to find them. In this video, let's focus on first-party cookies. Each web page you visit leaves a first-party cookie, and it's harmless. The cookie is just a small text file that's stored on your browser. No one can find out who you are from a cookie file. I like to describe cookies as a reverse bookmark. When we visit a site that we want to remember, we add it as a bookmark to our browser. A cookie does this in reverse for websites. The website bookmarks you with a cookie in order to remember you. When you return to a website, it recognizes your visit as being from the same computer.
