- The way in which your eCommerce Website is structured will greatly impact its overall performance in search engines. It is important that your Website is structured in a way that makes it easy and intuitive for your Website visitors to find the content and products that they are looking for. This also helps search engine robots with indexing your Web pages quickly and gives your SEO brownie points in the eyes of Google and other major search engines. Let's have a look at what a silo structure is. A silo structure is a way of categorizing the content on your Website, making it easier for your Website visitors as well as search engines to index the content and find the relevant information on your Website. Let's have a look at some of the benefits of a silo structure. It makes for a great user experience, it makes it easy for search engines to find your content, and it helps you to create a simpler site map. There are two types of site maps that you might want to create to help you boost your search engine traffic. The first type of site map is your HTML site map. This is a map of your entire site of which makes it easier for your Website visitors to find your content and products, and the second type is an XML site map. This is a map of your entire site of which makes it easier for search engines to access the content and products on your Web pages. Let's have an example of a silo structure and also an example of these types of site maps. This is an example of a silo structure. At the very top, you have the home page and then you have different menus that categorize your products on your Website. So, if you were selling shoes on your Website, you don't want that information to be cluttered. That's very bad for your search engine optimization. The easier you make it for your Website visitors and also Google to quickly identify what product is what, then the better you are likely to rank in search results. As you can see, I have three main menus. One is Men's shoes, then I have Kid's shoes, then I have Women's shoes. Underneath those main menus, I also have sub-menus. I have Men's sport shoes, Men's work shoes. This helps to further categorize my products. Underneath Women's Shoes, I also have High heels and I have Flats and Pumps. As you can see, this makes my Website really well organized. You want to use this as a template for creating your products, and using these menus in a similar way for your Website. Let's have look at how you can create your XML site map, and your HTML site map. This will help to feed the search engines and also tell people where the different products are on your Website. This is an example of an XML site map. As you can see, it has all these different types of links and it looks very unsightly. This is because this is specifically to be seen by search engines. This is an example of a HTML site map. As you can see, it looks a little bit more user-friendly, so your Website visitors can actually come to your HTML site map and quickly identify information that they might want. It's a good idea to have links to your XML site map and HTML site maps in the footer of your Website. Here, I have a link to my HTML site map and also to my XML site map to make it easy for my Website visitors and also for Google and other major search engines to find where they are. If you don't already have site maps for your Website, then you can come to this Website XML-Sitemaps.com and you can plug your Website in and click start, and this will generate a site map for your Website. Once it has fully generated, you can then download that site map and upload it to your Website. When you view your site map details, you will see the option to add your site map to Google so you can give Google a map of your entire site. You can also give this site map to Yahoo and Bing by signing up for Bing.com/toolbox/webmastertools. Site structure is majorly important not just for SEOs, but for the overall profitability of your eCommerce Website. If users understand how to navigate through the pages on your eCommerce Website, they are a lot less likely to get frustrated and leave your Website before making a purchase. Likewise, Google and other major search engines reward Websites that provide a great user experience and if you are focused on this, you can greatly increase your chances for improving your Website's ranking in the major search engines.
