- Self-efficacy is the psychological state that inhabits all of us in some degree or another and defines how confident we are in our own abilities, our own abilities to overcome challenges and issues that we might face in our life. In many ways, we hear about self-efficacy as the holy grail in professional sports. All athletes are coached and trained, and the real holy grail is the athletes and teams that find themselves able to cope with the problems and challenges they face in the field of play without a coach's intervention. In other words, that ability to self-manage, the confidence to deal with the issue without having to go to somebody in a more senior or more hierarchical position. And it's really interesting because so many of us have a reflex as a coach, as a manager, to interject, to intervene in people's lives if we see them struggling, and so we tend to overmanage people.
