Using a virtual private network (VPN) to provide remote access to your network

- In this section, I'd like to talk about gaining remote access to your network. This will typically be accomplished via a virtual private network, or a VPN. A VPN allows us to establish an encrypted connection over a public network. So, you could be at a coffee shop that has free WiFi, and you could use VPN to create an encrypted connection back to your network at your home or your office. Data would travel from you at the coffee shop to your network at your office. That data would be traveling over the public internet, but it would be encrypted. Therefore, it would be secure. In order to accomplish this, we'll need a VPN server, and these come in a few different flavors. You can purchase a stand-alone device that connects to your network, whose sole purpose is to receive VPN connections. This is sometimes called a VPN concentrator.
