- I'd like to talk about some command line utilities…that you can use to find out more information…about your network and troubleshoot some issues.…We'll talk about three different utilities,…ipcofig, ping, and traceroute.…Ipcofig provides basic information…about the IP address and subnet of the local machine.…So at command prompt, I can just type in ipcofig,…and the results show I have an IP four address…of 192.128.1.118,…a subnet mask of 255255255.0,…so that means my network is 192.168.1,…and I am on the host 118.…
We also see an additional piece of information,…the default gateway,…in this case 192.168.1.1.…Remember gateway is another word for a router.…So my default gateway serves as the first place…my computer will look if it needs to find information…on a different network.…So anything that's on the same network as me,…the computer could find by just going through the switch.…In order to communicate with a machine,…my separate network I'll need to go through a router,…and in this case the appropriate router is 192.168.1.1.…
