I'd like to talk about serving IP addresses with DHCP.…Every device on the network will need an IP address.…We could go to every device individually,…and manually configure the IP address.…This technique is called using static IP addresses.…If you're going to use this technique,…it's a good idea to keep track of all of your IP addresses.…I usually do it in a spreadsheet,…just one column with a list of IP addresses,…and another column with a list of which device…is using that IP address.…
That way I don't assign the same address…to two different devices, which would cause some problems.…But realistically, rather than manually configuring every…device, I would like some way to do this automatically.…I would like when a device first attempts to connect…to the network, the network gives it an IP address.…That automatic configuration can be done by DHCP,…which stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.…DHCP will assign an IP address, a subnet mask,…and a default gateway to each device on the network.…
