- In this section I'd like to talk about a few tips on running Linux on a small network. First we'll talk about the host file. Host files work very similarly in Linux and Windows. They allow us to do a single name resolution for the local machine only, so we can hook up a certain IP address to a certain name for this machine. Here at the terminal I'm going to open up the host file using a text editor. I'll need to use sudo for this because it does need elevated privileges. The file is located in the etc directory and it's just called host. And here we see a listing of IP addresses and host names. I already added 192.168.1.1 and called it MyRouter. That will make it much easier to find my router in the future. I don't have to memorize the IP address. Another thing you might do with this is provide names for your printers. So if your printer had an address of something like 192.168.1.10, you can add an entry that says the IP address and then LaserPrinter, and now in the future any time…
