Understanding network speed

Nothing effects a network deployment as much as the speed and quality of the network connection. So let's talk about network speed. When we're talking about network speeds, we mean the speed measured in bits per second at which data can transfer. Under the best possible conditions, between two points on a network interface. This does not mean that on a gigabit network, that you will actually see true gigabit speed from point A to point B. It doesn't mean that 100 megabit will get 100 megabits of speed across that wire. It's the optimal amount of speeds. So what are these speeds? We have the very old school 10 megabit, which is 10 million bits per second. 100 megabit. And one gigabit. Now, in our experience, imaging over anything less than a switched one gigabit network is a really bad idea. Over a 100 megabit network, everything is going ten times slower. And I can only tell you that ten times slower when you are talking about transferring a compressed disk image. That is perhaps 13…
