Using tools in Modo
- A fundamental aspect of Modo is understanding the difference between item and component modes. So far everything I've done has been done in item mode and item mode is a top level mode where you are manipulating existing items, either by moving them, or rotating them, or scaling them. Component mode, however, is a lower level mode where you are manipulating the structure of an item. The three main component modes can be accessed on the Modo tool bar here at the top, and they are Polygons Mode, Edges Mode and Vertices Mode. And when you enter any one of the three component modes you can then directly edit and select those components. So if I switch to Polygon Mode and I select polygon, I can activate the transform tool by hitting the W key and simply move that polygon in 3D space, and then hit Q to drop my tool. One very important thing to understand is that any transform operations that you carry out in component mode are not going to affect your item's center. Let me demonstrate…
