- Imagine the largest demonstration in U.S. history. What was it? Civil rights? A war? Equality? How about Earth Day? Now, imagine organizing it without the internet. The year was 1969, and Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson, had been watching millions during the late 60's protesting the Vietnam War and civil rights. His passion for the environment had always been strong, but with a recent oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, the senator felt the time was right for an equal dose of concern for our planet, and he was right. On April 22, 1970, with barely seven months of planning, from conception to campus sit-ins and rallies, the nation witnessed the largest demonstration in history, 20 million strong. The week before Earth Day, one of the largest publications of the era, Look Magazine, arrived in millions of homes with a picture of an American flag with green stripes and a strange logo in the field where the stars would otherwise be.
