Doodles: The upside of a wandering mind

- I grew up in an era when there was a stationary telephone in every home. And in my home, there was always a notepad and pen next to it, for taking messages. Yes, it was before answering machines, too. As the youngest in my family, I recall watching my elders on the phone, and it was then that I learned an important part of talking to someone included drawing pictures on a pad of paper. I can't remember who told me this was referred to as "doodling," but the process stuck. I used to love to come check out the telephone doodling pad, and before long, I could identify the artwork of anyone in our house. There was always a random phone number scribbled in, or an address, but, for the most part, the artwork represented a free-form stream of consciousness. In hindsight, I'm willing to bet there were some great stories behind the doodles. If only I'd known what to look for. This whole tempting idea of prying eyes, quietly peeping in on others is what makes the doodle such a tempting visual…
