Understanding MIDI interfaces

- [Instructor] Logic can talk to several different types of MIDI devices. In this movie we'll break them down, and look at how to connect to them via Logic. We'll start with MIDI controllers. MIDI controllers are devices that can send MIDI performance messages to Logic. Often they look like conventional keyboards, but they could also be in the form of, drum pads, controller knobs, even MIDI saxophones, or MIDI guitars. So here's an example of the Axiom 49, it has traditional keys, but it also has sliders, and knobs to send MIDI messages. Now these devices can be used to play and control the many amazing sounding software instruments in Logic. The ones that you'll find when you make a software instrument track, and set up a patch. Other types of external MIDI devices are, "Control Surfaces." Now control surfaces use MIDI not to play instruments in Logic, but instead to control Logic playback system or virtual mixed console.
