- [Bill] Now that we know how the three most common mic types work, and now that we also know about some of their characteristics like frequency response and polar patterns, it's a lot easier to discuss the strengths and weakness of the mic types. And this is a good time to consider more of the typical specifications you might see on a microphone's technical data sheet. The microphone you select for your specific recording situation makes a big difference to the sound of the final recording. It's amazing how easy it is to get great sounds when you've selected the right mic for the job and you've run the mic through a high-quality preamp.
