Getting started with EFM1

Hi! I'm Brian Trifon. Welcome to Virtual Instruments in Logic Pro. In this chapter, we will be exploring EFM1 frequency modulation synthesizer. EFM1 is an FM synthesizer that is really excellent for creating anything from rich detailed textures, subtle modulating pads, or harsh digital leads and grinding metallic sounds. In the following videos, I will walk you through the basics of FM synthesis and how to set up the Carrier and Modulator oscillators to create a solid foundation to construct FM sounds.

Next, I will show you how to use the Volume and Modulation envelope to shape both the timbre and amplitude of the sound. Then we will explore how to use the LFO to create periodic modulation of both the pitch and timbre. After that, I will show you how to thicken your sound with the Unison, Detune, and the Sub-oscillator. We will wrap things up by taking a look at the very useful randomization features in EFM1, which make the process of programming new and variations on existing presets incredibly simple. So let's check out what EFM1 sounds like.
