Getting Started with EVD6

In this chapter we're going to explore the EVD6. The EVD6 emulates the classic Hohner D6 clavinet. The clavinet was popularized in the 1970s by artists like Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and the Commodores. EVD6 uses physical modeling synthesis to simulate the basic sounds of a D6, as well as a variety of other string instruments like harpsichords and guitars. If we take a look at the interface, down in the bottom section we have the global parameters. Here we can choose our D6 model that will be the foundation of our sound.

On the left side of the global parameters, we have the Voice and Tuning settings. If you look over here, we have our Filter settings, and to the right of that, in the center, we have the Pickup and Stereo Spread adjustments. Next, we've got our model, and so here's where we're going to select our D6 model, and next to that we have the Level controls. This is going to be our output level. And then on the far right of the global parameters, we have our Damper settings. If we take a look up at the top we have our Excite, Click, and String parameters. So, here's where we'll customize the articulation and characteristics of the strings.

In the center, we can adjust the pickup position for the upper and lower pickups, and then over to the right we have our FX section. So, here we can add in distortion, compression, three types of modulation effects, and the Wah effect. We can also set the order of our FX chain right here. So, now that we've taken a brief tour of the interface, let's hear what EVD6 sounds like in a musical example. So, in this musical example, I have several instances of EVD6, and listen for the wide range of different kinds of string tones that we can get from the instrument.

So, let's hear it. (music playing)
