Frequency modulation

- In this movie, I want to take a slight detour and talk about a new kind of synthesis we haven't spoken about. It's called frequency modulation. Modulation is a concept we've already been using in this course in our enriching with LFOs movie. Modulation works with two important signals, a carrier signal, and a modulator signal. The carrier signal is your basic sound. The modulator signal operates on the carrier signal to change it in some way. As we've seen, when we used our LFO, we modulated our carrier signal, which was the synth volume. This type of modulation is called amplitude modulation or AM synthesis. Now frequency modulation or FM synthesis also uses a carrier and a modulator. But instead of operating on the carriers amplitude as we did in AM, the modulator and frequency modulation or FM synthesis works on the carrier's frequency. So you're modulating the frequency. The results can produce an extremely…
