Join Dot Bustelo for an in-depth discussion in this video Discovering Arpeggiator, part of New Ways to Create Music with Logic Pro X.
The Arpeggiator is a very cool example of the new type of plugin and logic (UNKNOWN) called midi plugins that you can insert on the channel strip of a software instrument. They offer amazing real time midi processing formerly only possible in the enviroment. or one of the MIDI editors, none with the level of sophistication, ease, and fun now possible. Let me play you this project. All the synth parts are using arpreggiator except the bassline. There are actually five Arpeggiators going.
(MUSIC) Without the drums. (MUSIC).
You select the MIDI effects font right above the software instrument insert, right over here. And choose Arpeggiator from the pop-up menu on the right. The slot is located just beneath the EQ thumbnail and before the instrument slot. The MIDI plug-ins are all green, easy to distinguish from the other plug-in inserts that are blue. To remove, hover over that same insert with your mouse and choose No Plug-in from the top of the pop-up menu, which is not what we want to do now.
And our pageator plays and repeats notes in a chord one at a time in a particular pattern or a sequence, sometimes referred to as a broken chord. (MUSIC). I'm holding down three notes of an f minor triad with this percussive squared patch and this is how it sounds with our pageator enabled. (MUSIC) I'll bypass Arpeggiator by clicking this knob near the left edge of the label. You could always Opt+click to bypass, and here is that chord without Arpeggiator.
Now I'll add it back in. Let's look at the interface. You click to open. Just like that, click once, a, lets make the scale a little bigger. Move it up to 75%. Arpeggiator provides a number of killer preset patterns right here in the lower-left. We'll listen to in a minute. There are variations, octave ranges that switch to inversions, and all of these different options for the node order.
Up and down, random. Honestly, these presets all sound quite musical immediately. I'll solo the drum track, the tribal dub step apaloop and this Arpeggiator track track and move the cycle to the first eight bars where the drum is playing. (MUSIC). Let's try one of the pattern variations.
I like this one all the way at the bottom of the list. Up beat pump, listening now. (MUSIC). And maybe this one, echoed cycle. (MUSIC). I can change the node order with these tabs here. Put it on Random. (MUSIC).
And I'll make the octave range four. (MUSIC). These are just different variations. (MUSIC) It's that easy to switch these around. I'm going to hit Compare to reset it. (MUSIC). There are a ton of Arpeggiator patches in the Library in the category labeled Arpeggiator.
This one on the first track, traveling without moving is from the synth layer category. Let me take these other tracks out of solo. I'll just play one note on the keyboard. (SOUND). Here in the library are all of the Arpeggiator patches and again there's all of these different subcategories within the Arpeggiator category. And these acoustic layers are amazing too.
Let me go back. Listen to this one on top, the dynamic string ensemble. (MUSIC). Again, I'm just holding down a triad. Three notes at a time. (MUSIC). Be sure to check out all of these in the library to give you an idea of the lush, evolving patches possible. I'll put the patch back to the one I was using, traveling without moving. That was in synth layer category here at the bottom.
(MUSIC). Let's go back to the percussive squares patch, to tour the 3 main areas of the arpeggiator plug-in. Here are the control parameters on top, the play and launch controls. Beneath, are the note order parameters to determine the Arpeggiator type. This one with the hand, is where you can create your own note order. There are four variations for each note order button, as well as with the octave range control. The arpeggio rate knob is here on the left. On the bottom are the advanced parameters.
These four tabs Pattern, Option, Keyboard, and Controller. Open each parameter group. I regularly experiment with the pattern popup menu. But these other advanced options are for when I'm ready to go deeper into our pageator design. Let's go back to the control parameters on top. The play button starts and stops playback when you trigger notes whether logix transport is playing or not. Here's the play button, on. I'll disable it, and now this is all you hear when I play a note.
Enable it, and you'll hear the full. The Capture Live Performance button is cool. Click this button while the Arpeggio is playing. It glows, then drag it to any software instrument track. It captures the pattern as a MIDI region on the track. So I'll start playback. You'll see the Capture Live Performance button glow. I'll grab it and drag out to the main window, and we'll have the MIDI data on another track.
(MUSIC). It's glowing, grab, drag it onto the track. Now, I can specifically place those MIDI events or adjust them in a MIDI editor like the piano roll. With Latch mode the Arpeggio keeps playing without you holding down any keys. I'll demonstrate with the music typing from the Window menu let's select the Percussive Squares track again. Go to Window > Show Music Typing. And now with Latch mode selected all I do is hit one key and the arpeggio will sustain.
(MUSIC). Let's deselect Latch mode. And now it's only going to sustain as long as I hold donw this F key. When I release arpeggio stops. A few options in the pop-up menu for the latching behavior, Transpose will transpose the arpeggio relative to whatever key you press changing the root note of the chord.
(MUSIC). C, B, A, and so on. Gated transpose is like transpose, but the arpeggio only plays while the key is pressed. (MUSIC). The option Add, lets you add to the latch. Arpeggio, or like the next option is called Add Temporarily. So that if I was holding down a few different notes, I'm going to do this from my music keyboard.
Put this on Add. I'm holding down three notes. (MUSIC). And now I can add a fourth note. (MUSIC). Through let's you play notes along with arpeggio that won't be arpeggiating /g clear. We'll clear the latch memory without having to turn off Latch mode. That way you won't lose your settings. Any of the amazing patches from the factory using Arpeggiater or any software instrument you insert Arpeggiater to yourself It's designed to instantly introduce creative movement and texture to your project.
(MUSIC). Then when you're in the creative zone there are tons of cool arpeggiated perimeters to experiment with. (MUSIC). To introduce unique complexity and subtlety to your projects for very modern, or very classic results. In the next video, going deeper into our pageator, we'll do just that. (MUSIC).
